For some years, the province has taken a series of measures to reinforce the implementation of the strategy of prospering Shandong with science and education.

Society

Shandong has always highly recognized the importance of education at different levels and of various types. Within the provincial territory, there are 52 general institutions of higher learning, including those administered by the state ministries.

Infrastructure

The length and grade of the highways in Shandong province is well known throughout China. By the end of 2001, the total length of highways reached 71,128 km or 45.68 km per square km in terms of highways density.

Resources

Mainly relying on rainfall, the province's water resource is in scarcity, with only 520 cubic meters of water available for each of its residents, accounting for 18.8 percent of the national average of 2,770 cubic meters per head.

Geography

Shandong province is a significant coastal province in East China. Located on the lower reaches of the Yellow River, it borders the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea in the east, and faces the Korean Peninsula and the Japanese Archipelago to the east.

Basic Facts

Shandong Province is situated along the eastern coastal lines and in the lower reaches of Yellow River, comprising of peninsulas and inlands. The Shandong peninsula stretches out between Bo sea and Yellow sea, stands facing each other with Liaodong peninsula and embraces the Bo Sea bay.
